What is Mashiko pottery?

Mashiko ware is a pottery produced in Mashiko town of Haga county in Tochigi prefecture. Mashiko pottery started its history in 1853. It is said that Keizaburo Ootsuka opened kiln after his training of Kasama ware in Ibaraki. Mashiko town produced great pottery clay that is good with glaze. Also, Mashiko town is near Tokyo. Therefore, the town became prosperous as a producing area of daily necessities such as water jars, bowls and dobin teapots.

In 1924, a potter Shouji Hamada moved in Mashiko. He promoted Mingei (National Art) Movement. Mingei Movement discovers “beauty of daily use” in the handicrafts which are used in daily life.

In Mashiko pottery, craftsmen started to produce flower vase, utensils for tea ceremony and tableware. In the big wave of Mingei Movement, the charms of Mashiko pottery spread to all over Japan.

Now, Mashiko pottery produce modern items with new skill or design for today’s lifestyle. Stylish and daily-use Mashiko pottery is getting more and more attention.
