Orthodox kozara (small plate) with komon (Japanese traditional pattern)

What kind of dishes do you daily use? Maybe, small plate (kozara) is one of the most useful dishes. You use small plate to put table seasoning, serve your own salad, or distribute cakes to your guest. Even more, you can put not only food, but also accessories or keys.
As it is most frequent use plate, we recommend you this Hasami porcelain kozara offered by Azmaya (the name of brand).

Hasami porcelain has 400 years’ history. Hasami is one of the porcelain producing areas in Nagasaki prefecture in Japan.
Hasami porcelain is famous for its beautiful white porcelain and detailed paint with Gosu (deep blue glaze). Also, elegant openwork and meshwork make Hasami porcelain special.
The craftsman of Hasami porcelain uses Amakusa porcelain clay for crafts. By firing it, Amakusa porcelain clay will change into hard and white.

Azmaya is a brand selling Japanese modern goods and tableware. They visit crafts producing areas in Japan and collect beautiful and polished dishes or miscellaneous goods. Azmaya was established in 1997. They state their concept as “products that customers can use and love for a long time, and crafts that do not compromise with the skill and material.” Tableware of Azmaya reminds us nostalgia as well as modernity.

4 reasons why we recommend this kozara

  1. Best size

The most important thing for kozara is its size. Since you use small plate in various ways, it must not be too big or too small. In this sense, the kozara from Azmaya is the best size. It is moderate flat and shallow. That is why you can put sauce or salt without spilling them out.

  2. Easy to store

You do not have to worry about storage space. This kozara can be piled easily. If you pile five plates, the height would be only 5 cm (about 1.9 inch). Just a small space is needed for store them.

  3. Simple and modern design

Simple and modern design is the feature of inban-kozara of Azmaya. About inban, please see “What is inban?” below. Here, let us focus on its design.
Azmaya offer 5 types of inban-kozara; kuyou, kikuju, karamatsu, koushi, and hikiami.
According to the Indian astronomy, kuyou represents the 9 astral bodies. Some bushi (Japanese general in Sengoku era) used the pattern as their crest. Kikuju is a pattern filled with kiku (chrysanthemum). The Imperial Family of Japan use the crest of chrysanthemum. So, kikuju is very noble pattern. Karamatsu is a design inspired by matsu, pine tree in Japanese. Since pine trees stay green even in winter, matsu is a symbol of eternity or long life. Therefore, karamatsu plate may bring you good luck. Japanese have been used koushi and hikiami for a long time. The connection of small repeated pattern reminds us the eternity. That is why Japanese have liked koushi and hikiami.
As you can see, all design of inban-kozara has their meaning. We wish this plate may bring you happiness.

  4. Handmade

All inban-kozara are created by skilled craftsmen in Nagasaki, a prefecture in Japan. Since all plates are handmade by craftsmen, each plate is different from each other. Therefore, the pattern of plates would not be same if you would have purchased three hikigami plates. You can get the only one product in the world.

What is inban?

Inban is one of the skill of printing. The pattern is printed from paper to porcelain. Craftsman wet the patterned “tensha-gami” (printing paper), and put it on to the unglazed pottery. Since craftsman put and print one by one, all plates have their own face. That is one of the pleasure of handmade product.

For example, our manager has one of the plates. As you can see in the picture below, the pattern of it is a little bit over the edge. This character makes the plate ordinal. We believe that you can love the inban-kozara all the more for its uniqueness.
